Nellie Kelly Grafted Hass Avocado will grow into a tall tree of up to six metres, and bear deliciously buttery, medium-sized fruit with rippled black skin within three years. (Non-grafted avocado seedlings take around seven to 10 years, or may not produce fruit at all.) Because of the specialised hand-grafting technique and carefully chosen root stock, this tree will thrive in cooler, frost-free climates as well as tropical and sub-tropical gardens.
How to grow Hass Avocado
Choose a well-drained, sheltered location in full sun. Hass Avocado does not tolerate freezing temperatures. Water newly planted trees immediately, then two to three times weekly, decreasing to weekly as the tree grows. Remove any growth below the graft, including suckers, using a sharp knife or blade. Prune lightly to remove damaged limbs or to shape your tree.
Enjoying your Hass Avocado
Hass avocado trees are evergreen and produce yellow flowers in spring. Avocados mature on the tree, but do not turn soft until after they are harvested. They’re super nutritious, containing good fats and 20 different vitamins and minerals. Fresh, ripe avocados are a treat eaten whole as a snack, smashed on toast or as the hero in guacamole.
